The Pen is mightier than the sword, but the Pen must sometimes move the sword against corruption if the corrupt are not moved by the pen.. An idea without an implementer is useless. "The Rulers do not carry the sword in vain"Rom 13:4

Philosophical Re-education- from BLAIR COTTRELL's UPF facebook page.

If I may, I'll try to make a contribution to Blair's page.   Let me begin with a brief  but incomplete survey of 'philosophy'.....

Beginning with the Greeks.  The two main approaches were Stoicism and Epicureanism.

STOICS believed the body and mind must be mastered and that the 'passions' should be kept under control or we would end up destroying ourselves.

EPICUREANS  believed that the 'pleasure principle' was the highest good.

History has been the story of the pendulum swing between those two extremes.

CHRISTIANITY arose from the backdrop of the Hebrews, and the Old Testament,  the Messiah was foretold and his role would be radically different from the normal human expectation.... rather than dominate like a King, he was to be:

"....pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.  Isaiah 53

UTILITARIANISM is the belief that the greatest good for the greatest number should guide government. It falls apart on many levels, but  sounds good to the 'political' types. Jeremy Bentham tried to reduce this concept to mathematical equations.. he failed. (after all..'what' is...'good'?)

MARXISM  Dialectical materialism, atheist.. built on the spurious understanding of Ludwig Feuerbach's also spurious  "the Essense of Christianity"
Destined to fail, as it did.  Rejected the idea of 'division of labor' (Smith) and held unworkable ideas about 'alienation' that fall apart very quickly in the real world.  Marx spent his time contemplating, thinking,  writing..courtesy of Engels CAPITALIST generated money trail and trust fund.. oh that we all had one of those.

ESSENTIAL READING for the pundits of progressive purity is.. (this is remedial therapy)

Social Contract. (Rousseau)  (plus his 'Confessions')
Emile (Rousseau)
Leviathan  (Hobbes)  (State of Nature and our response to it)
Candide (Voltaire)
"Moral Philosophy and Theory of Justice " (John Rawls)
On Liberty (Mill)
Treatise on Toleration (Locke)
"Perpetual Peace" (Kant)
"Federalist Papers"  (various American founding fathers)
"Democracy in America" (Alexis DeToqueville)
"Sermon on the Mount" (Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ)

AND IF..you have any time left, you could grab a copy of "The History of Skepticism" by Richard Popkin..and you might get an inkling of why your progressive heads are so scrambled.

I"m most interested in the direction Blair takes this page :)

MEDICAL HELP..for all progressives is possibly available. You are in serious need of a boost of 2 brain chemicals.. Vasopressin and Oxytocin... refer your doctor.
