The Union Murder of Devonport Jobs (Tasmania)

I've just watched Landline, my favorite ABC show.  Prior to that, I've been doing some work in my office, while listening to both a doco about a Mafia bust in Calabria, Italy, and Milton Friedman on 'Economic Myths'.

Now..having seen on Landline that a food processing company in Devenport Trasmania was mentioned in the context of farmers becoming more innovative and diverse in their crops I looked up the food processing company SIMPLOT to find out what happened.

Yet again.. I find that labor Unions have hurled workers (Stupid, brainless workers I must add) onto the scrapheap of 'no longer needed' as the Factory, after giving plenty of warning about possible closure if competitiveness was not restored.... closed!

Here's the story:

Simplot has said the Manufacturing Workers Union's demand for a 16 per cent wage increase over four years is unreasonable. It threatened to close its doors last year, citing the cost of production, competition with cheap imports and the high cost of labour in Australia.
The absurd thing about all this, is the sequence of events is indicative of some very dark hearted people.. either that or they are just dull headed!

i) Unions demand continual improvement of conditions. (12% wage rises over 3 yrs, and wage protection)

ii) Company says... "you want more money... be more productive" (paraphrase).. so they did their bit and installed costly new machinery to assist in that goal... and...

iii) They are attacked by Industrial disruption in Tasmania and in other states where they have plants.

Now I ask you....why the hell would you  keep building billy carts in your neighbour's spacious garage if he continually ramps up the rent ?  Well... as the 'rent' approaches and even exceeds that you have allowed in your costings... you quickly look for another place with lower rent to build your billy carts!  I hope you see where I'm going with this. If the cost of manufacturing in Devonport is cranked up and up by an ideologically driven trade union... well you just look at your spread sheet and say "Well well well...we've just reached the point of insufficient return on our investment.... begin to pack the equipment... and close down the factory.

TWO GROUPS LOST OUT on this.. firstly the 'workers' and secondly, the farmers who supplied the raw food.
One farmer innovated and is now the biggest supplier/grower of Rhubarb in Australia.

I've yet to see any industrial action by Australian Unions which has the economic benefit of the nation at heart. The interests at work however, are..the jobs and packages of the Union leaders.... and the implied demand that the rest of Australia should subsidize the ever increasing wage and conditions demanded.

The Rudd Government promised Simplot $18 million to help secure the Devonport plant and another in Bathurst, which is to be downsized.   The State Government yesterday put up $500,000 to help Simplot stay in Tasmania. The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union has called on the new Federal Government to match Labor's commitment to save jobs.

Well... 'duh'.. of course this evil criminal Union wants the rest of Australia to support their outrageous demands.. it won't come through their productivity but hey... the Union will benefit from 'us' giving a new Tax to supply those demands

If I was an overseas supplier of food.. it would be in my interests to ramp up the cost of production in Australia, to make my own product much more attractive. Maybe you can think about that?

With my sense of justice at boiling point.. let me send a message to those Union leaders, it's a bit 'old fashioned' but eminently workable for we Aussies who are sick to death of their lies and corruption and their work for overseas interests!

THIS IS HOW IT COULD BE ONE DAY...(For Union leaders, organizers and their hangers on...... Call them.."The House of Ahab"

So the palace administrator, the city governor, the elders and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: ‘We are your servants and we will do anything you say. We will not appoint anyone as king; you do whatever you think best.’
Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, ‘If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel by this time tomorrow.’
Now the royal princes, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were bringing them up. When the letter arrived, these men took the princes and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel. When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, ‘They have brought the heads of the princes.’
Then Jehu ordered, ‘Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.’
The next morning Jehu went out. He stood before all the people and said, ‘You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who killed all these? 10 Know, then, that not a word the Lord has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail. The Lord has done what he announced through his servant Elijah.’ 11 So Jehu killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his chief men, his close friends and his priests, leaving him no survivor. (II Kings 10)
