The Pen is mightier than the sword, but the Pen must sometimes move the sword against corruption if the corrupt are not moved by the pen.. An idea without an implementer is useless. "The Rulers do not carry the sword in vain"Rom 13:4

Some C's for a Sermon.

We are gathered here today for a number of reasons, but the primary reason is to speak about our society and the values that drive it.

When people are bashing each other in Burke st, I feel discouraged.
When people are lashing out at each other in Lonsdale st, I feel discouraged.
When people are klobbering each other in King st. I feel discouraged.
When people are fighting each other in Flinders st, I feel very discouraged.

When a would be prime minister blatantly lies to the voting public about a carbon tax that will 'never' be put in by her government (and then does it once elected), -when the only thing that this now prime ministers supporters are upset with, is not the lie, but how that lie can be put into practice with the greatest of haste and kept in place even after the people voted resoundingly against it and kicked out that Prime Minister, -when an ex prime minister dies during sexual relations with his sons ex girlfriend, -when a Victorian Premier instructs the security detail to warn him of his wife's impending arrival so he can trot his secretary out from his office where he was having  sexual relations with her....when Senior Politicians act like famished undisciplined children at the banquet table of national wealth and scramble for  illicit opportunity, -when we find them all acting like voracious vultures that devour our economic flesh, predatory pirates who pillage our treasury, and scoundrels who squander our national propriety,  it's understandable that we lose hope, lose vision and lose faith in our democratic process and I feel discouraged and degraded!

-When men who claim to represent the downtrodden, the hard working  battlers are driving luxury cars and living in lavish lifestyles while the conditions they won are putting other less well connected people out of work everywhere, I am not only discouraged and disturbed,-  I get angry!

Corroded Social Values  ...................................................Doubts about what is good.
Confused moral values .................................................... Degeneracy in mind
Compromised view of right and wrong...("Indefinite grey")  Deterioration of spiritual health.
Chaotic conduct.................................................................Dysfunctional violence.
Conspicuous evil.
Callous behavior................................................................Dubious business practice.
Collapsing Society. ...........................................................Dismantling of all Good.

These things result from  compromised  moral values. Lack of moral values signifies a disconnection with the source of all right- from the Almighty. Like an angry savage dog held back by a restraining leash, suddenly our social order has been set free, no more restraint, no more self control but worst of all, no reason to even think about why 'not' to do something. A lost society languishes in the quicksand of the eleventh commandment.. "Thou shalt not get caught"!

When our social values have collapsed,  our social order will follow on, like a house of cards that crumbles at the slightest physical contact.

Confusion about right and wrong, good and evil.

Chaotic Conduct

As a ship without an anchor in a raging sea is blown in the direction of the biggest wave, so too will we as a society  experience the same thing. When our disconnection from noble and enduring tradition is complete, we will not only be like that ship drifting, we will then be like it catastrophically crashing on the jagged rocks of disaster due to our own extinguishing of the light from the lighthouse.

Collapsing social order.
The Enlightenment tried to find a 'New Man', a man who is free from religious domination and able to determine his own destiny. But it seems that each man does what is right in his own eyes.  Each person has his own version of good and bad, right and wrong.  Those ideas are shaped in the mould of self interest and gratification. When one mans gratification conflicts with that of another, violence breaks out.

FDR once said.."This is pre-eminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly, nor need we shrink from honestly facing the conditions in our country today"

Jesus said I am the light of the world, but we have dimmed that light by our own departure from divine grace. We have run and fled from the light, from the free give of freedom in Christ, because we desired the darkness. The light exposes not only the dangers ahead of us, but also the deficiencies of our hearts. His light overcomes the darkness, but we loved the darkness too much. so we turned our backs on that light!

When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound, and time shall be no more,
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I’ll be there.

But will you?

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (Eph 2)
